Eco Church Award
St Nicholas has been awarded ‘bronze’!
Thank you for all your help in reaching this achievement! We worked as a church from July 2023 to gain the bronze award from Eco Church. From auditing our building/land/lives, to tips in our newsletter, to our 'communal Christmas card' and net zero pledges; we have done sufficient to reach this milestone! Praise God!
More about Eco Church
Climate change is now becoming a reality for us all. We just look at the ‘unseasonal’ weather we are experiencing this year and it is evident that the planet is changing and ‘groaning’ under the pressure its people are putting on it.
As Christians, we are called to care for God’s creation. The Church of England has pledged to become ‘net zero’ by 2030, and the Diocese of Sheffield is encouraging all its churches to look at how they can become more environmentally aware and safeguard our planet for future generations. This is why St Nicholas, (as of July 2023) is embracing ‘Eco Church’.
Eco Church has been created by A Rocha, a Christian environmental charity, with support from Christian Aid and is used across different denominations of churches in England and Wales “who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth”. This is a FREE, on-line survey of 101 questions, which churches complete and build up their environmental credentials through ‘bronze, silver and gold’ awards.
There are five areas to complete in the questionnaire, covering aspects of church life:
-
Worship and teaching
-
Management of church buildings
-
Management of church land
-
Community and global engagement
-
Lifestyle
Churches complete the unique online Eco Survey about how they are caring for God’s earth in different areas of their life and work. The answers a church provides will collect points towards an Eco Church Award – the more your church does, the more points you get! There is a lot of help and resource on the website to help improve the initial survey scores.
As a church, we are encouraged by our PCC to embrace this initiative, which offers an opportunity to deepen our own discipleship and to reach out and engage with the wider community about the breadth and depth of the good news of Christ.
This demonstrates that we:
-
express our care for God’s world in our worship and teaching
-
look after our buildings and land
-
engage with our local community and in global campaign
-
reflect eco-sensitive values in the personal lifestyles of our congregation.
